We passed a Lomo LC-A+ on to our pal, Noah Kalina, a popular New York based photographer that is best known for Noah K Everyday and even publishes his own magaine, Kalina Magazine. Take a look at his gallery, his well known videos and an interview below!
REAL NAME: Noah Kalina
CITY: Brooklyn
COUNTRY: USA
How long have you been a Lomographer (or are you new to this whole thing)?
I have had the LC-A+ for over a year now.
Describe the LC-A+ in five words.
Small, quiet, simple, durable, magical.
If your photos shown here could have a soundtrack of three songs, what would they be (song title & artist please).
Grizzly Bear – While You Wait for Others
Beirut – My Night With The Prostitute From Marseilles
M83 – We Own The Sky
Tell us a little bit about the self-portrait project and video: What inspired you to do it? Was it something you had planned or just an idea that took on a life of its own? And at any point did you want to give it up and if so, what kept you going?
Both the advent of digital photography and an interest in the subtleties of the aging process were inspirations for my “everyday” project. The plan was simple. Take a photo of myself every day and never stop. I am 10 years into it now. It has become a habit now, so taking the photos is the easy part. Every month when I upload the photos to my computer, process them, date them and update the website, I get bummed out because it is an incredibly tedious process. But I have been doing it for too long, it would be silly to stop.

You’ve been parodied on the Simpsons, which in our book is a pretty incredible honor when it comes to cultural relevance… what has it been like seeing this project that you spent so many years working on get so much attention?
What has happened has far exceeded any expectations I initially had. I think all artists want their work to be seen by as many people as possible. A lot of people have seen this project and have been inspired by it. I think it is amazing.

There have been a few other attempts at this type of project that have grabbed the attention of popular culture, yet there is something quite compelling about your video that made it stand out above the others. About 2/3rds of the way through there appears to be a change in your eyes, as if you experienced something life-changing. You’ve captured something in this video that seems pretty transcendent, and perhaps this is what is so compelling about your video. So if it isn’t too personal to ask, what happened?
Unfortunately it isn’t very exciting. I think what you saw was a change in cameras. To this day nothing seriously traumatic has happened to me.
Ok, here’s the scene: you’re somewhere right now with your LC-A+ camera and a sack of film, surrounded by people you love in the most inspiring location you can imagine… where are you?
I am definitely floating in space.
If you could shoot any person alive or dead (or imaginary) with your LC-A+, who would it be and why?
My LC-A+ doesn’t discriminate. I will shoot anyone or anything with it and do the multiple exposure trick.
What’s coming up on the horizon? Any new projects? An update to the video? In other words, what keeps you busy these days?
No plans to update the video. I stay busy with editorial and commercial photography assignments. I have been working on various personal projects, unfortunately I have to keep them top secret.
Your advice to future LC-A+ shooters.
Just shoot it! You can do no wrong with this camera.
