Community Gallery: LomoChrome Color '92 Sun-kissed 35 mm
9It's been a few months since we launched the new version of our latest ISO 400 color film the LomoChrome Color '92 Sun-kissed. Bringing out more golden tones that will make everything glow, this new rendition is perfect for brightening up any scene. As more and more Lomographers have gotten their hands on the film, we take to the community to find out their thoughts on this nostalgic and cinematic film stock.
@kvnbyln – New York City, USA
Showcasing street scenes of New York City, Lomographer @kvnbyln moves between High Line, Lower East Side, Chinatown, and Manhattan Bridge. It was his first time using LomoChrome Color '92 Sun-kissed and he noticed that it was much warmer than the original Color '92, especially when shot during the late afternoon/golden hour, with some of his images having have a slight sepia tint. He also says that both versions of '92 are grainy, which adds some sharpness and can also make for artistic, even illustrated-looking results, especially when printed.
Like the rest of the LomoChrome lineup, Sun-kissed loves light and you’re guaranteed to get usable photos if you meter for mid-tones or shadows. With my first roll, I rated it at both 400 and 320 ISO and looked for reds, greens, and blues in my scenes, as I guessed those colors would shine with Sun-kissed (and indeed they do!) If you want more fine-tuned color control in post, I would recommend scanning the negatives yourself, with something like a DigitaLIZA / DSLR setup. Overall, this new version of ‘92 can be shot anytime during the day, so don’t be afraid to experiment. That’s what Lomography is all about!
@macasaett – Tanay, Philippines
Manila-based Lomography writer and avid adventurer @macasaett took the LomoChrome Color '92 Sun-kissed out of the city and into the lush mountains of Rizal for a day of trekking. Despite the lack of sun, you can see how the Sun-kissed edition still provides a warmer tone compared to the original rendition. The fine-grain structure somehow makes the mountain ranges appear as if they are a painting.
I've used the first version of the LomoChrome Color '92 in both 35 mm and 120 film formats. The first version hinged on cooler tones and pulled back saturation and contrasts, overall, giving photographs a softer and slightly dreamier look. The latest Sun-kissed version comes off stronger and more pronounced thanks to its warmer colors as compared to its predecessor. One thing to note when using this film stock is to try to meter it at 200 ISO to get a finer grain structure and to use flash when photographing indoors!
@xmanuel130 – Lake Caldaro, Italy
Perfect for a hot Italian summer, @xmanuel130 showcases the warmth of Color '92 Sun-kissed in its natural habitat. Venturing to Lake Caldaro, which is located in Nothern Italy, he says that "this film is perfect for recreating summer and nostalgic vibes. I mostly shot while I was out with friends at the lake or wandering in the mountains. It was perfect for capturing those moments". You can see in his photos the magic of a carefree summer is simply presented. Almost looking like postcards from the 90s, you can really see the strengths of the film.
Sun-kissed feels more balanced in terms of tones, with higher contrast and warmer hues, and it seems to retain shadows better in low light conditions. Both films are perfect for everyday shooting because, compared to other films, they don’t shift the colors too much. I’d first recommend shooting outdoors with natural sunlight. I haven’t tried it yet, but I believe sunset is one of the best times to shoot, along with the golden hour, to really emphasize the warm tones the film offers.
I usually overexpose a bit to capture all the details better, and the film works well when given more light. I’ve also tried overdeveloping it, which is perfect if you want to enhance contrast and grain.
@francislee – Hong Kong
A very active member within the community, @francislee is known more for shooting in monochrome. Every once in a while he wants to add some color to his photos and used the latest version of LomoChrome Color '92 to light up the streets of Hong Kong. Shooting this reminded him of his early days in photography as he finds that there really is a 90s glow and charm with each photo taken with this film stock. Comparing both editions he told us he would use the Sun-kissed edition for more outdoor photography as you can really see it shine during golden hour as it accentuates the warm lighting.
As mentioned, if shooting outdoors, I would choose LomoChrome Color 92' Sun-kissed and try to find side or backlighting to let some sunlight into the lens for a dramatic effect. I also think it would work well for concerts or stage photography.
@erinnonfilm - Cape Coral, US
LomoChrome Color '92 is a film stock that somehow transports you to the past. The color renditioning of the faded tones brings out memories of a time gone by. The newest edition the LomoChrome Color '92 Sun-kissed adds a punch of warmth to every photo and you can really see this with @erinnonfilm's first roll. Luckily finding a vintage car show her pictures look like it's as if she shot them during the golden age of America. Even with the interior shots, LomoChrome Color '92 Sun-kissed really shines in every situation thrown at it.
It's a really beautiful film! I love the warm colors that popped out so effortlessly. It effortlessly gave a gorgeous summer feel to the photos. Don't be afraid of low light, this film handles it well. I found this stock to really help tell a story with its beautifully warm colors. It captures wood/golden tones like a bee to honey. I haven't found a situation it wouldn't shine in. My next adventure with this stock will be portraits and long exposures!
