In the Frame: Expired Film

In our new series we're calling In the Frame, we’re encouraging our Community members to get creative with monthly photography prompts we’re all familiar with. Let's see these prompts in a new light, explore new possibilities and create new experiences in film photography!

For this edition, we're turning the spotlight on the ethereal beauty of expired film. While many choose to avoid shooting with expired film, there's an unforgettable wonder and a sense of excitement when one takes a leap of faith and chooses to shoot expired rolls.

They can come from anywhere. Antique and flea markets, secondhand camera stores, or online through fellow shutterbugs around the world. Some of them we inherit, while some others are precious enough to spend a couple of bucks on. Anyone who has been shooting film long enough has surely gone through the expired film experience.

And for anyone new to the craft, there's a lot to look forward to when a roll of film calls for patience, understanding, and of course a little bit of courage! For this round of photography prompt, we encourage the Community to rummage through their shelves, drawers and freezers and shoot an expired film.

Shooting expired film can go many ways depending on how long the film has been past its freshness, and especially, how expired film was stored. So before shooting, feel free to look around the Lomography website for sample photos or even ask fellow shutterbugs who have shot with your specific film stock.

Through this series, we'd also like to highlight the work of our Community members who share their photos with us through their LomoHomes — they continuously inspire us to take the risk and shoot our shot free of expectations!
